MORGAN SWEET (South Wales)
Popular in S. Wales mining towns in C18th. A large greenish-yellow eater, sweet and juicy. Eat in September. Also use for an early sweet cider ready by Xmas.CHANNEL BEAUTY (Swansea)
Popular in S. Wales markets in the 1920s. Has a good savoury taste, crisp, juicy and with a Cox-like aroma.-
GOOSE'S A*SE (Dyfed)
A large green tangy early cooker, named because of its shape rather than its flavour. BAKER'S DELICIOUS (South Wales)
1932. A handsome bright orange/red/gold apple. Very aromatic with a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. Eat in September.CHAMPAGNE APPLE (Carnaerfon)
Original tree given to Mrs. Huws (Bont Newydd) in the 1960s by Lady Newborough. Prior history unknown. Very juicy, sweet yet tangy. Pillar box red. Eat from September to December.MONMOUTH BEAUTY (Malpas)
Originated 1750. Popular in local C19th market. Crimson-flushed with a rich scent and texture. Pick and eat in September.SEEK NO FURTHER (Monmouth)
A fine, light russeted mid-season eating apple. Use October to December. The creamy white flesh has a brisk, nutty aromaic flavour. Can also be used as a single variety cider apple. Very high vitamin C.RHYL BEAUTY (Clwyd)
1920. Rich, fne fruity flavour similar to Blenheim Orange but juicier. A long-keeping dessert apple. Pick October. Use December-April.PIGEON'S BEAK (Pembroke/Denbigh/Anglesey)
An old Welsh mid-season cooking apple. Origins uncertain. Large, round with a pale green skin. Lovely flavour. Little additional sugar needed when cooking.PENRHYN CASTLE PEAR (Gwynedd)
Origin unknown. A beautiful large golden pear that has a pink flush when ripe. Sweet, juicy firm flesh, similar to Comice but much easier to grow. Pick in October.PLAS TY COCH MIRRABELLE (Carnaerfon)
A delightful, very early golden plum. The flesh has an exquisite blend of sweetness and acidity with a buttery smoothness. Several trees found in North Wales.
